Volunteering at Manger-Weil House is sure to be life changing – both for you and for the children you will meet. For those who have never traveled to the third world, it is an opportunity to gain perspective on the blessings we in the west enjoy.

As you make your journey to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and on to Mekelle, the city in which the orphanage is located, you are sure to witness signs of obvious poverty and it will be clear to you that many of the comforts of modern life have not yet arrived here. Walking is a much more common form of transportation than driving in cars. There are no supermarkets as westerners think of them. But you will have no problem finding running water, televisions and cell phones in Ethiopia. You will also find friendliness, kindness, reverance and humor in great abundance.

Medical care is sorely lacking in Mekelle and if you are a physician or other health professional you will have a chance to make a huge difference in the lives of both the orphans and the local community by volunteering. There are opportunities for ESL teachers, computer and other skill trainers, and for those who would simply like to help out at the orphanage. Some volunteers have planted gardens and run errands. Others have helped to build walls. And it's always great just spending time with the kids.
